Two Held Over Huge Softbank Data Leak
June 2004
Japanese police arrested two men Sunday for allegedly obtaining client data from Internet service provider Softbank BB Corp., sources said. The massive leakage of data came to light in January. The two men, Yutaka Tomiyasu, 24, and Takuya Mori, 35, were arrested on suspicion of attempted extortion in connection with the leakage of data on about 4.6 million subscribers to the company's Internet connection service, Yahoo! BB, and gave the data to a right-wing organization for its use in an extortion attempt.
Tomiyasu allegedly hacked into Softbank's database from an Internet cafe near Kabukicho, in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, and copied the data.
Tomiyasu told police that he obtained the password to access the company computers from a former temporary staff member at Softbank, the sources said.
According to the police, Tomiyasu conspired with executive members of the right-wing organization in early January to use the data to extort 1 billion yen to 2 billion yen from Softbank, calling the money consultancy fees.
In February, the Metropolitan Police Department arrested four men for allegedly trying to extort money from Softbank in two separate cases.
